Stargirl
November 17th, 2008
She was elusive. She was today. She was tomorrow. She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl. We did not know what to make of her. In our minds we tried to pin her to a corkboard like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew.
Have you ever met someone so different from yourself, or anyone else you knew, that you honestly didn’t know how to react? If you haven’t, wait until you meet Stargirl.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all felt free enough and confident enough to simply be ourselves?

Hey Mrs. Hampton!!!!
I am so glad that you have a blog for Stargirl. I didn’t get into it when I read it by myself but now, I can’t wait to see what happens next!! The reader on the tape is soo good. Personally, I feel free to be myself at shool like Stargirl, as you have probably seen, and I like how Stargirl is. She is not afraid to be harself and I like that. I now love this book but I don’t know why I didn’t get into it before. Oh well!!! TTYL=)=)=)=)
Hey Melissa! Sometimes you just have to read a book at the right moment. I’ve tried to read books and haven’t been able to get into them because my mind was on something else. It’s nice to have some people that you can talk to about a book.
I agree that John Ritter has done a great job with the reading of this book.
Stargirl is interesting on many levels. I’m glad that you are enjoying it so far!
Hey Mrs. Hampton!!
When I first read Stargirl, I was in 5th grade and didn’t understand much so I just quit it. I am much more machure now and have a better vocabulary. I loved the sentence stalking thing and now I actually understand how to use a mentore text!!!!! I was never sure before=0….. oh well. TTYL=)=)=[)
Hey mrs. hampton
I am so glad theres a blog 4 stargirl!!!!!! in someways i’m like stargirl
i am not always tryin to fit in so i create my own way of doin stuff!!!! I guess u could say me, melissa, heather , alison , emily form our own little group so we r always being our self…..hahahaha she has a lot of energy like u ♥
Melissa, I could see how Stargirl would be a little over your head in 5th grade. Maybe not so much in the vocabulary, but just in the tone and themes of the book. It is probably easier too after reading The Outsiders.
Caitlin, I think it is wonderful to have a group of friends where each member feels comfortable enough to be herself.
I think (or at least, I hope) there is a little bit of Stargirl in each of us. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if we would just let it show?
TTYL
I love Stargirl! It’s been one of my favorite books ever! I’m so glad you all are reading it. It teaches us a lot…
I’m so glad you, Melissa, and you, Caitlin, feel comfortable in your own skin. At this age, that is so important.
Have fun finishing the book and you might want to continue her story in Love, Stargirl…the sequel. We have it in our library!

I Really Like Stargirl*
I Think It Really Gives A Message That
Just Because Your Different Dosen’t Always Mean A
BAD
Thing. Personally, I Think It Would Be Cool
To Be Like StarGirl And Not Care What Anyone
Else Thinks About How Odd You Act
♥;;
Marissa*
Marissa, I agree! I envy Stargirl’s free spirit and self-confidence. IMO, confidence is the main difference between Stargirl and other people.
I like Stargirl too, and I am glad that you are enjoying it as well.
Blog again soon, okay!
I think that Stargirl isnt just for girls. I think its for anyone who tired of being like everyone else. And just so u know iI feel like im like stargirl only two promblem.1 im not agirl so lets keep it like that. 2 im not a star im a different type of person.
You know that this book has me wondering something that Ive just figured out. this book is like Gable and other middle schools that being different isnt a bad thing its what makes us human i mean i probably wouldnt twirl around and play the ukalalie no sir I would sing dance and play the ukalalie.
I really like the book stargirl. It is showing that some people are different but its not always in a bad way . Many people thought that stargirl was crazy and came from a wiwerd place, but now wvwryone is starting to see that stargirl is not bad at all. She is the most popular kid in the scool now. I really love this book so far and I am looking foward to reading on in Stargirl. I think that if more people were like stargirl then this world would be much, much better.
so far i like the book. i like the book because its funny.i think they should do that hotseat thing here at gable. it get more people to know about u. so far my favorite part was when they were in the cafeteria and stargirl came up to Alan Furko or how ever u spell it and started singing happy birthday to him.
this book kis the best book ive read besides the outsiders.
i know star gurl is different from other people bu she could fit right in :-0

I’m So Excited About Reading Stargirl Today!!
I Wonder What Crazy Thing She Will Do Next
* I Saw Melissa Walking Around At Recess Playing
A Ukalalie. I Thought It Was Funny
lol

i love stargirl
it’s so facinating. I’m really getting 2 like it.
♥
I cant wait 2 find out what happens next!!!!!
I think it tells a good message to be yourself not like others well TTYL:)
Reading Stargirl is so much fun she is so diffrent then the other people in her new school. You don’t know what she will do next!!!
Stargirl dosen’t want to be like other girls she wants everyone to know that she is diffrent and I think that is so cool!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey! Thanks for all the positive comments about Stargirl.
Eston, Hot Seat would be a fun thing to do at Gable. Who would you interview if you had the chance?
Raina, I agree that the world would be a much better place if people were more like Stargirl. Why don’t more people act like her?
Patrick, I am SURE you would sing and dance around the cafeteria. I am glad that you feel that confident. (You must have a WONDERFUL mom).
lol
Marissa, Krystal, and Bridgette–I am so glad that you are enjoying the book. It’s a different kind of book, isn’t it?
I love Stargirl too! I read Stargirl as a read aloud to my classes when I taught 7th grade Language Arts at Woodruff Middle School. It has such a powerful message of ” Be Yourself.”
I see many of my students at Gable being like Stargirl every day. You don’t have to be “different” to be like Stargirl. Just be yourself…no matter where you are or what you are doing. You will soon find that people will respect you, love you, and maybe even admire you for your integrity and your sincerity. Just be Yourself!
Hey guys! It’s so important to be yourself because you never know when your are actually being a role model for someone else! Being yourself is sooooo much easier that trying to be something you aren’t.
How important is it to be yourself?? VERY!! I have always been different. During school I was the one that finished last due to a reading disability, however, I did not let that stop me from achieving my goal of becoming a teacher. Today I feel that I have a heart for those that need that extra push or that vote of confidence.
Wow! Even the faculty is joinin in to the blog! Welcome, welcome, welcome!
Mrs. Dillard introduced me to this book. She and Mrs. Hall can lead you to a lot of awesome books. Just ask them!
Mrs. Bush, thanks for taking the time out of your hectic schedule to talk about Stargirl. And thank you for bringing the books to Gable!
Hey Mrs. P and Mrs. F–come again anytime! Thank you for your words about being yourself.
Whassup!!!!!
Stargirl is actually pretty cool… at least right now. I’ve been reading WAY ahead of the tape (sorry, can’t help it, it’s just that good) and i feel like i’m going to finish the book and then everyone’s going to be behind and I’ll be bored like i did when i read ahead on the outsiders. when that happens, I stop liking the book. AHHHHH I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO!
Hmmmmm, Stargirl is interesting but ughhhh….. I don’t like it! To me its boring or maybe it’s just not interesting enough where we have gotten to. I hope it gets better as we go further. It goes right along with Virctory and Oh, Rats! at the moment. Sorry Mrs.Hampton.
Satregirl is a very “interesting” book. I like it, but it is kindof random =]
)
this is a good book. it describes everthin good. i think this is going to be a good book.:)
Star Girl is getting more interesting every chapter.
mrs.hampton i dont Really like this book. it is kinda wierd and i dont really like weird books.that stargirl is very wierd to and seh is not like evryone else. sometimes u have to be like everyone else if you wana be somebody
Stargirl is just about the best book i have read so far. Don’t all you other bloggers think so?
Sincerly, The Unknown Porkchop
Hey Mrs. Hampton!!!!
I love stargirl!!! I can not wait to finish it!!! It is so interesting to see the people in the books reaction! Stargirl is now one of my favorite books and I can’t wait to finish it.
TTYL=)=)=)=)=)=)=)
“Stargirl”, awesome but very strange. She is a different kind. The book is the BEST. I wasnt sure what it was going to be about but a stargirl. And she is a stargirl.
this book is also good in a way. buttt i guess everyone likes diffrent things . but i guess its just whatever u like. this book just isnt for me!!!!!!!!!!
I think it is very important to always be yourself. Too many times people try to be what others want them to be, instead of being who they really are. I want people to like me for the person I am, not some fictional person I pretend to be. When I was in highschool I had a diverse group of friends, I didn’t believe in “clicks”. I judged my friends based on their character, not how “popular” they were. I had friends on the football team, I had friends on the chess team, I had a lot of friends that were skaters. It didn’t matter to me how many friends someone had, if they were a good person, I gave them a chance.
The first thing I thought about Stargirl was, “WOAH!! She must be really crazy!! Dancing in the rain?! DANG!!” Then I got it a little. She’s just being herself. Im so glad Mrs.Hampton is letting us read it because it is very entertaining. Thanks, Mrs.Hampton!
Hey!Mrs. Hampton i’m so glad you made a blog for Stargirl. I didn’t understand the book at first. It was kinda wierd when we first started reading it. I understand it better now. This book gets more and mere interesting. I love it. Everyone is actually a lot like Stargirl. We are just being ourselves. That’s what makes us unique and I like being myself rather than the whole school being the same!!! :>
I thought this is a really good book…
By the way.. Melissa that was really really funny at lunch yesterday when you sang to Mallory. You should do that more often.
Stargirl is an amazing book. She brings excitement to the school of MHS. I think she would be a cool girl to meet.I can`t wait to finish the rest of the book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this book is pretty good so far i think that it really kool how Stargirl does so many things without being enbarrased. She has just come to a new school most people would try to make a good impression but of course Stargirl doesn’t. Stargirl is a very unusual character than most. What we have just read was that people were not as amazed when Stargirl did something weird.I people are thinking she is turning “normal” i think that it is just tamparaly
Mrs. Hampton i’m fallng n luv w/ ths book. it’s kinda like wht hppns @ ths skool accept it’s meaner than middle skool. i lyke how Stargirl’s unchanged evn whn she’s a cheerleader. The skool was shallow and is wuz expecting her 2 break under pressure ov being individual but instead she broke tha shallowness ov MAHS. i cnt w8 4 tha nxt chapters
Hey Mrs. Hampton
I love this book! I can’t wait to see what happens next! I thought this book was going to be really boring since everyone one was saying that they didn’t like it, but now I know. It’s great!
Ok well TTYL!!!!!!
heyyy Mrs. Hampton!!!!!!!
Stargirl is an amazing book. I think it’s important that everyone should be themselves themselves. If you follow everyone and do what they do, then that’s being them;not you. I love to do things my way and it’s good that you do. Be individual!!!! :] And original!!!!! ;] This influence on kids our age because most times in middle school you try to fit in. But later on you figure out that you are following everyone. So it’s great to live your life how you want to. TTYL!!!!! ;]
Mrs.Hampton, I think you are just like Stargirl. You dance in your class like any teacher would never do. ( I mean it in a good way.) Thanks so much!
Hey mrs hampton,
oh well maybe on monday wink wink
what up!! stargirl is a great book! I wish we could read it for a whole period, but i guess that is not working because we are in the computer lab now
Chase, it is okay if you don’t like a book. Maybe it is because of where we are in the book right now, or maybe this isn’t your kind of book. . .yet.
You are such a unique person, this may all seem kind of silly. And that’s okay. We don’t all have to like the same things.
Thanks Mr. Miller for adding your comments!
To all the other Hamptonian bloggers: welcome and come again to share your thoughts. I love to read your comments and I know that you all like to read each other’s comments. Feel free to comment on each other’s posts.
TTYL
Hey Mrs. Hampton and all the other bloggers!!!
Stargirl just keeps getting better everytime we read it. I agree with Kaylee, we should read it for a WHOLE class period. It would be fun. When we first started reading this book, I thought that it was going to be boring like the first time I read it but I have learned, IT IS NOT!!!!!
I am glad that Gabby, Marissa, and everyone else liked my performance with the ukalalie!! I LOVED doing it and I would do it again ANY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!=) I think eveyone at GMS acts like themselves and that is what makes us unique instead of being a school of “gray blobs”=)
TTYL=) =) =) =) =) =) =) =) =) =) =)

I Thought Of This Really Cool Idea (atleast i think it would be)
Anyways, I Think That Maybe
We Could Have A Day At School
Were We Can/Have To Wear Something
We Normally Wouldn’t Wear And See What
Other Peoples Rections Are.
let Me Know What You Think of That Idea
*i’m sick today..
I Miss Reading Stargirl
Marissa, great idea! We can talk about it after Thanksgiving. I’m so sorry that you are sick. If you are not here tomorrow, maybe someone can pick up a novel for you. Just have them call me in my room and I can rush one to the office.
If you come back tomorrow, I will let you borrow a book so that you can catch up on what we have read today in class.
Feel better soon!
♥;;
I’m feeling a lot better so i will be back tomorrow
I Wonder What All I Have Missed
Hey everyone!!!!
Hey everyone!!!!!
Marissa, I love your idea about having a day were you would wear stuff you wouldn’t normally wear. I know that would be a GREAT way to express ourselves. We would see alot of peoples personalities.
TTYL=) =) =) =) =) =)
stargirl is wierd
Dusty, Stargirl is weird. But is that weird in a good way or weird in a bad way? To tell you the truth, we are all weird. If you ask my students , my children, or my friends, they will ALL tell you that I am weird. But I like being weird. I like being excited about books and words. I like that when I’m excited, I dance–anywhere. Walmart, Food Lion, even in my classroom!
It drives some people crazy, but it’s who I am. So, what kind of weird do you mean because I am a big fan of weird people!
I thought that stargirl was a really girlly book, but i found out that it was more than a girly book. Also i think that stargirl should take some theropy classes.!~!~!~!~!~!
I think that Stargirl is a really good book but Stargirl is really wierd it was funny when she went to someones house after a funeral she wasn’t invited to.
Stargirl was the coolest girl in school now evryone is being mean to her and that is so mean !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
♦’~’
Ians right, that was a funny part of the book.
I’ve Read Ahead in the book (since i had to take it home and do my quiz and all)
but now i know
and it’s REALLY REALLY REALLY good!
This may sound a little weird, but in the first few chapters i thought Leo was like a 9 or 10 year old kid…
but him driving the pick up kind of threw me off.
Cody, Ian, Krystal, Marissa: Good comments!
Cody, I am glad that you realized that Stargirl isn’t really a “girly” book. It’s about about people–really about human nature. Think about Leo and his friend at the beginning of the book when they were wondering if she were really “real” and if she could survive unchanged.
Ian, why is it weird to go to a funeral without being invited? Is it possible to be sad because of someone else’s loss? Empathy is an important thing to have. (If you don’t know what that is, look it up). I admit that it was unusual for Stargirl to go to the girl’s house after the funeral and I don’t think Stargirl should have gone that far, but I thought it was okay to attend the funeral. What do you think about that?
Krystal, I also think that Stargirl was cool, maybe the coolest in the school. If we believe that then why aren’t more kids true to themselves?
Marissa, I am so glad that you are enjoying this book. Oh, you thought Leo was continuing his flashback. I’m glad that you got that straight now!
Thanks for commenting. Come again!
stargirl is a wierd cheerleader and cheers for the other team:-( she is cool (at times) other times she quite the oppisite:)
