The Outsiders

October 16th, 2008

What do you think of the novel, The Outsiders?   In my opinion, Johnny is the most realistic character.  Actually, all the characters are realistic.  Johnny breaks my heart.  Unfortunately, I have taught students who remind me of Johnny.

Tell me what you think.

I look forward to reading your responses.

I am glad that you like The Outsiders. This book is over 40 years old. Why do you think so many people still like this book? Most books that are really old aren’t that popular anymore. What is it about The Outsiders that make students want to read it?

  3.   Melissa Pehling on October 29, 2008 12:05 pm

i LOVE the Outsiders and will definately make my kids read it when they grow up. Johnny is my favorite character along with Pony. They don’t like hurting poeple but I guess none of them do. I am so upset that Johnny is dying and I hope he doesn’t. I can’t wait to finish the book and watch the movie!!!!!!!!

  5.   mshampton on October 29, 2008 12:45 pm

Melissa and Heather, I am so glad that you two are enjoying the novel. It is definitely one of the best novels that we read in seventh grade.

I am torn between Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally as my favorite characters. I like Dally because he appears to be tough, but I don’t think he really is that tough. Have you ever met anyone like that?

  6.   Melissa Pehling on October 29, 2008 8:58 pm

I like Dally too. I have never really thought about him like that but now that you mention it ………………………………. I see where you are coming from!!I have known a couple peole like that and they act all tough but I know if they were asked to fight, for real, they would turn them down. Dally has so many soft spots on the inside but is hard on the outside.

In the book they don’t say to much, unless i forgot, about Two-Bit.What do you think about him? TTYL=)

  7.   mshampton on October 30, 2008 8:34 am

Two-Bit kind of reminds me of a class clown. Most kids in class who like to cut up a lot are really hiding some kind of hurt inside or they crack a lot of jokes so that people won’t know how sensitive or vulnerable they really are. Two-Bit has a great sense of humor, and unlike some of the other Greasers, he has a mom who loves him. But I think the fact that he is a Greaser who lives on the wrong side of town has to hurt him. He knows that his chances in life are limited. I think that’s why he stays in school rather than find a job. He likes being a kid who makes everyone laugh, rather than being an adult who needs to grow up.

    ♥;; I LOVE The Outsiders!
I really like Johnny. He’s my favorite.
I heard something happens to him in the movie
    & I will probably cryy.
Pony and Johnny are my two favorite characters
because their like down to earth people and all.
    They Don’t Like hurting people…
This book makes me think about how people
really don’t have it good all the time.
& Just because someone has more money
    dosen’t mean they are happier.

    ♥;;Marissa

  10.   mshampton on October 30, 2008 8:46 am

    Good observations Caitlin and Marissa!

Marissa, you could not have said that any better. Just because some has more money or is very popular or is on a football team or whatever we may think of as having “everything,” does not mean that the person is happier.

If you think about it, Darry, Soda, and Pony were happy when their parents were alive. They didn’t have any money then either, but they had a lot of love. After the fire at the church, they seem to find that love again and become a stronger family unit.

Why do you think it took something so drastic-the fire, Johnny being hurt, etc.-to make Pony realize that Darry really did love him?

  11.   *m a r i s s a♥ on October 30, 2008 7:48 pm

    ♥;;
In My Opionon, the fire brought them closer together because they all realize that they all could never get along with one another with out Johnny. I Think That Johnny and the rest of the gang members have made Darry, Soda, and Pony feel loved but No One Can take the place of your parents.
When Darry cried in front of Pony because he was afraid he had lost him it was really sad. It was like. . . Pony didn’t know how much Darry loved him until he saw him cry. & Pony finally realizes Darry really does love him and he is just a little harsh on him because Darry dosen’t want Pony to get hurt or worse… killed.

  12.   Melissa Pehling on October 30, 2008 8:44 pm

I totally get how you relate Two-Bit to the class clown. Every time they mention him in the book there is a little bit of humor. I really hope Johnny gets bette because if he dies, I am probably going to cry.=(

Does Cherry come back any more in the book because I am still waiting for her to REALLY redeem herself. One more question. Does Martia come back or was she just kind of there and “in the moment” at the movies?

Oh and I almost forgot, Thank You SO, SO, SO, SO, SO, SO, SO, SO, SO, much for doing the poetry celebration. I really enjoyed that and LOVED hearing how my friends write. I’m sorry I can’t be in your class tommorow, I’ll be singing=) Don’t do too much without me and inform me on what I miss. See you in the Hall!!!!

  13.   mshampton on October 31, 2008 8:30 am

Wonderful discussions. I love reading your comments.

Yes Marissa, I think the fire did bring them closer together. When you think about it, when something is tested or put through the fire, it comes out better–pure or even golden.

Melissa, Marcia doesn’t really come back into the story. She is a minor character. As for Cherry, it depends on what you mean by “redeem.” I’ll let you decide for yourself.

I loved the poetry celebration. Everyone did a fantastic job and I am so proud. You all blow me away with your writing abilities. We don’t share enough of writing in class, but I intend to change that!

    :-D

Hey mrs. hampton. i’m going to get on your nerves by doing this:
awwwwwww brett, awwwwww brett awww brett aww brett. peace out, brett.

  15.   Clay on October 31, 2008 10:49 am

that poetry project was fun to do. I think the idea is spreading to other teachers. Mrs. parris is making us write a poem about govt ideas we’ve been talking about. She even wrote a poem herself. It wasn’t bad.

  16.   Dylan on October 31, 2008 10:50 am

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll Bret! When do we watch The Outsider movie?

  17.   mshampton on October 31, 2008 10:56 am

    BOYS!!! :-)

Clay, I’m glad that you enjoyed the poetry celebration and I am glad that other teachers are incorporating it into their lessons. Start thinking about which character you would like to write about for your character analysis.

Dylan, we will watch the movie on November 5th and 6th.

I’ve heard from the girls. Which character appeals to you fellas the most?

  18.   Mrs. Williams on October 31, 2008 11:02 am

Unfortunately, I too have taught some students who remind me of Johnny. As a matter of fact, I have taught students who remind me of every character. I really think that S.E. Hinton does an outstanding job describing the characters and it makes you feel that you really know them. I have to admit that Two-Bit is my favorite character because he is so funny and I wish I had a better sense of humor sometimes. I also like Dally because he is such a strong and fearless character. Who is your favorite?

  19.   Clay on October 31, 2008 11:03 am

My favorite character has to be two-bit. he is a really cool guy and jokes around a lot. i believe that joking is an essential part of life and people who do funny things are a lot happier. I don’t think 2-bit could deal with everything that goes on without his humor.

  20.   Jason on October 31, 2008 11:14 am

Yo yo yo! i am going to be a greaser on the tee shirt. i might be pony for the character. the book is very good. thanks for telling us to read it.

  21.   mshampton on October 31, 2008 11:15 am

Clay, that’s deep! I think you’re right. I think Melissa and I discussed this a few comments ago. Two-Bit uses his humor to disguise his frustration (IMO). But I think you’re onto something–joking is an essential part of life. One has to learn to roll with the punches.

Mrs. Williams, I agree. I think I have taught every character from the novel. S.E. Hinton hit the nail on the head! Do you think it was because she was so young when she wrote it? It blows me away how relevant this novel is today. It’s hard to believe that it is over 40 years old.

  22.   mshampton on October 31, 2008 11:17 am

    Wassup Jason!

I’m glad that you like the book. S.E. Hinton has written other books that you might enjoy. Check out my Reading Lists for Dudes in the library. Let me know what you think.

  23.   Clay on October 31, 2008 11:20 am

What are some of the titles on your Reading Lists for Dudes? I don’t normally have time to go to the library, unless I know exactly what i want. Can you list some of those?

  24.   jason on October 31, 2008 11:22 am

i am wondering if we are going to read another series in class?

  25.   dusty smith on October 31, 2008 11:24 am

the outsiders was like real people being written about. they all have their own personality and pony and johnny has that kind of personality that makes them stand out. dally’s personality is “i rule the world-mess with me and you get hurt,” two-bit is the kind of person that don’t care what you think of them. darry is the good football and a good gardian for pony and soda, but he kinda is a showoff because of his mustles.soda is the handsome one of the group and he never likes fight between family. steve on the otherhand fights with anyone except soda and is kind of ashamed when pony tags along with them.the outsider was a great book and novel i totally recamend this book to any young or adult reader that would like to read it.

that is completely unfair that you guys have already seen the movie!
:-( however, we hamptonians are going to rock Johnny’s trial. I am so hyped for when the judge comes.

  30.   jason on October 31, 2008 11:37 am

i can’t wait to see the movie! i hope it is as good as the book. will you please let us see a sneak peak of it?

  31.   mshampton on October 31, 2008 11:37 am

Clay, I have novels on the list by Richard Peck (the author of A Long Way From Chicago), S.E. Hinton, and a few sci-fi and fantasy fiction writers. You can check my list from the GMS website too.

Jason, we might read a series. I have another book in mind to start in November, but this one has a girl as the main character. I gotta be fair, right? Yes, bret, blogging is cool.

Dusty, YOU ROCK!! I love your analysis. Yes!
That was absolutely brilliant. You definitely understand the characters. I could not have said it any better myself. As a matter of fact, I might borrow a couple of your words to help some of my students understand the characters better. Good job! Which character do you think that you are the most like?

Diamond & Amanda–Thank you for your comments. Ponyboy as pure and kind of evil? Hmmmm, elaborate please. Tell us why you all feel that way about Ponyboy. A lot of people think he is just pure. I happen to agree with you about the mixture of pure and evil, but I want to hear your reasons.

It was awesome the way they shaped the people emotions and thoughts even resposibility. The book, author, and even the charachters has talent and potential . All the charachters is well rounded.

Hey ya’ll the book “_The Outsiders_”, if you know me i say “beastly” a lot and i think the outsiders is…… beastly :) . The book was so good, also i think the book was not AS sad as the movie itself. At first i didn’t think it was going to be interesting but…… turns out it is one of my favorite books. That was my sumary of the book from my opinion. :) “Stay gold pony!”

Mrs.Hampton I just finished the book and im a little confused on how it ends, where is PonyBoy at when the book ends?

Another thing I am wondering about Pony says that three people are dead I only know two, Johnny and Dallas, and im pretty sure he isn’t talking about his parents, because that would be 4 people. Im just confused¿

I really liked The Outsiders it is the best book I have ever read. My favorite character is Dally because he is really cool and doesn’t care if he goes to jail.

  41.   CODY D on October 31, 2008 12:44 pm

I like Dally out of all the charactors, he is outing, tuff, and has a wicked personality. He reminds me of my older cousin. He is the same but not all as mean and crazy as Dally. I like how SE Hinton expressed every charactor with nice details. For all who have not read it yet should. IT WAS AN AWSOME BOOK █████!!!!!!

  42.   Blaise on October 31, 2008 12:46 pm

    Zac, welcome to the blogosphere!

Where is Ponyboy at the end? Hint: CIRCULAR STRUCTURE

Go back to the beginning. :-D

Caleb & Kyle, wassup! I like your comments about the book being “beastly.” Very interesting. I appreciate the fact that you all recognized that the characters were all round, just like people. The first chapter is kind of long, and it some students get lost or bored and they stop reading. From chapter 2 until the end, the book is a page turner.

You’ll be reading A LOT of fantastic books in the future. So, don’t dislike a book just because your mean ol’ teachers make you read it. You might discover that you really enjoy it!

  46.   mshampton on October 31, 2008 2:05 pm

Cody, Brooke, & I Dog– I understand that Dally seems really cool. But doesn’t he seem kind of tragic too? I mean, do people really want to behave the way that he does?

I was watching this special on gangs the other night, and the person who was narrating the documentary was a former gang member. He said that most gang members only pretend not to care. Do you think this is true of Dally? If he really didn’t care about anything or anyone, then why was he so upset about Johnny? Why did he agree to help Johnny?

Also, think about Dally’s life: in jail at the age of ten. TEN! I think that kind of life breaks something inside of people. This is just my opinion, so please tell me what you think.

I appreciate your comments. Y’ALL ROCK!

  47.   mshampton on October 31, 2008 2:10 pm

Grace I, few people comment on Darry. IDK, it’s like people don’t really like him that much. I am impressed that you recognize that it would be difficult to become a legal guardian when one is only 20 years-old.

IMO, Darry is one of the most honorable characters in the book. That doesn’t mean that he is my favorite, but you kind of have to respect a person who puts off his dreams of going to college or even having any fun in order to take care of his two younger brothers. Soda is also honorable. He drops out of school (which is NEVER a good idea) in order to work to help Darry take care of Pony.

I believe that some of Pony’s frustration at the beginning of the novel is related to the amount of pressure that he may have felt. He has a lot to live up to in his two brother’s eyes.

What do you think? Impressive comments.

  48.   mshampton on October 31, 2008 2:14 pm

Blaise, what is something specific that you really enjoyed about the book?

It does have a great plot. There aren’t many books written for adolescent readers that are like this novel. What do you feel is the reason for this?

You know, when I was in school–a LONG time ago–this book had been out for a couple of years. We were not allowed to read it, and you couldn’t find it on the library shelves.

Why do you think this novel would bother someone?

  49.   Matthew on October 31, 2008 2:24 pm

    This book is very…um.. awesome!

  50.   Christen Roper on October 31, 2008 2:24 pm

The book was awesome. I really liked Johnny and Ponyboy. I was really sad when Johnny died and then right after that Dally. I kind of started crying. It is such a great book. I am thinking of buying the book so I can read it over and over again. Anyway the book was amazing and I hoped everyone liked it.

Hey Melissa! Yes, the blog recently became kind of popular. The more the merrier!

I am not allowing any comments that have anything to do with the way the book OR movie ends. As soon as the classes are finished with the novel, I will post those comments too.

Of course you can finish the book this weekend. Feel free! Fever 1793 is an amazing book. I remember staying up until 3am to finish it last year. (I don’t recommend that you do that!)

To all you bloggers, have a SAFE & FUN Halloween.

Feel free to blog during the weekend. I will check it periodically.

The Outsiders is a wonderful book to read. Which character do you like the most and why? Maybe you could answer Melissa’s question: Does Cherry redeem herself after telling Ponyboy that she can’t talk to him at school?

I am glad that you like The Outsiders. This book is over 40 years old. Why do you think so many people still like this book? Most books that are really old aren’t that popular anymore. What is it about The Outsiders that make students want to read it?

coming back to this i think people still like it b/c it’s a fanominal book this girl amazes me that she was only 17 when she wrote this book♥♥♥♥♥♥

    Caitlin & Kellyn,

I am thrilled that you all like this book too. You know, most girls don’t like this book as much as the guys. They think it’s a bit too violent. You didn’t feel this way. Why not?

Kellyn, what parts do you find confusing? Let me try to clarify it for you.

Caitlin, I am blown away by the fact that S.E. Hinton was a 17-year-old girl when she wrote this too. The reason that she used her initials (S.E.) instead of her name was because she didn’t think people would take the novel seriously if they knew the author was a girl.

  63.   Libby Kesler on November 3, 2008 12:29 pm

    Hi Mrs. Hampton,
I love The Outsiders!!!!!! My favorite characters were Johnny and Pony. At the end of the book, when Johnny died, I almost cried. It was very sad. Also I LOVE Darry. It is soo sweet when Pony and Darry finally get through to each other!! I can’t wait until we watch the movie!!! It is going to be sooo fun!!!!! I can’t believe that this girl was only 17 years old when she wrote this book. That is amazing!!! I had alot of FUN reading the book!!!!!

Whats happening ladies and gents the outsiders is beastly accourding to kyle aka ”Bags”.The book is about greasers and the socs. The greasers is the ruggud with the slick hair and the cool slang but the socs is like a polo american eagle shirt with a sweater around there neck ”they look like Carlton off of fresh prince of bel- air .The socs isnt as emotional as the greasers. The greasers will cry in front of their friends but the socs will lie and not feel a thing to their friends .The greasers fight together til death but the socs would say sike and run away leaving their friends. The greasers are true friends but socs are unloyal. GO READ THE OUTSIDERS. BE A FRIEND NOT A SOCS .

I am looking 4ward 2 reading other great books like this one. ALso what does it mean when Johnny syas:Stay gold. I still have no clue what that means? Blog again someday

  70.   mshampton on November 3, 2008 4:32 pm

Some girls think the novel is too violent. Others think that the Greasers are too much like a stereotype–poor, no parents who care, bad attitude. I don’t think the Greasers are a stereotype. Ponyboy is poor, intelligent, and has two brothers who care a great deal for him. I think that makes his situation unique and it makes him a likable character.

What does “stay gold” mean? Well, “gold” or “golden” is repeated throughout the book. Pony describes his mother as golden, he describes the time in the country as golden, the beauty of the dawn is golden, sunsets are golden–These are moments of great beauty, promise, and purity. In Johnny’s eyes, Ponyboy is full of promise and purity. In a way it means innocence too, though it is difficult to think of Pony as innocent because he has seen and heard too much. In Johnny’s mind, Pony is able to transcend being a Greaser through his ability to get deeper meaning out of ordinary things, like the sunset and dawn.

It was only when Johnny rescued the kids in the church did he have his golden moment. Although he lost his life, he became golden the moment he saved the children in the church. That’s why it is so heartbreaking when he dies because you feel like Johnny is just beginning to have some confidence in himself.

Hey Mrs. Hampton!!! I cried when Johnny died and was surprised about Dally. That shows you that Dally did love Johnny enough to kill himself to be with him. It is completely AMAZING that a 17 year old wrote this book. At the end when Pony is writing his report, I about started the whole book over again!!!! I love how the author wrote this book. It makes me SUPER EXCITED to see the move!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!TTYL=)=)=)

  72.   mshampton on November 5, 2008 9:54 am

Melissa, I am so glad that you enjoyed it! I remember the first time I read this book. I was heart-broken when Dally died. It’s like he just couldn’t take it. Then at the end, when Pony finds Johnny’s letter in the book, you realize that Johnny’s last thoughts were about Dally.

Yes, S.E. Hinton showed real brillance with this novel. Not bad for a 17-year-old. Her other novels are pretty good too, though they never received the same attention as The Outsiders.

There are a few in our library.

  79.   mshampton on November 5, 2008 1:41 pm

Greta, welcome to the blog! We discussed the meaning of “stay gold” on comment #70. Check it out and feel free to post a question about it later.

Basketball Star D–I’m glad that you like the blog! There are other books by S.E. Hinton that are similar to The Outsiders. Check out my reading list “Mrs. Hampton’s FAVES for DUDES.” You can access it from any school computer.

If you really like The Outsiders, check out the musical “Westside Story.” There are a group of outsiders in that musical. It’s funny and it’s a love story too.

#74 “Big C”–thank you for answering Zac’s question about the 3rd person who died in the novel.

I love it when you all read and answer each other.

    :-D

I still really like that movie and the book but the movie should have shown Bob get stabbed and Dally get shot.

    Love,
    I Dog

  81.   CoDy D on November 5, 2008 1:49 pm

I thought the movie was really cool but the graphics were to old and didn’t really give much detail. It was still pretty good. I think people who haven’t read it should check it some time. Every1 StAy GoLd

  82.   charles easteregg on November 5, 2008 1:54 pm

haha thanks kyle o and how was tryouts and i dont like the movie as much as the book it was to short i liked the book alot better

  83.   mshampton on November 5, 2008 1:56 pm

I Dog, I think the reason that the movie doesn’t show (in complete detail) Bob getting stabbed or Dally getting shot is because those aren’t the primary events in the novel. It is because the boys are outsiders that the stabbing and shooting happen.

They are the effects, not the causes. S.E. Hinton focuses on the causes.

Cody, I can’t imagine this story being presented in any other way. The story is set in late 1960’s. It wouldn’t be the same story modernized.

    Thanks for sharing!
    :-D

  84.   CoDy D on November 11, 2008 1:29 pm

I thought the court thing we did was kool. Even though our team lost it was still really fun. We should do that more often with our books. The thing i couldnt get was what to ask and how to ask it.
Again it was really fun and i hope we do it again. Idog is Ian

  85.   mshampton on November 11, 2008 2:34 pm

Cody D, I am so glad that you enjoyed the court case. You should thank Mrs. Williams! No one really won or lost. It was just so that we could all realize that Johnny’s case was not open and shut. There were lots of factors to consider.

We should do it again. We’ll have to brainstorm and come up with another case.

    :-D

  86.   SHELBY A. ; ) on November 15, 2008 11:08 pm

    hey yall
i felt really left out sooooo……..
i thought that the outsiders was a really good book
at the begging i thought that the book was going to be BORING
    BUT…..
    it wasn’t
i think that johnnys parents neglecting him didnt help at all with the killing
if his parents really cared 4 him they wouldve talked to him about how he felt
they probally wouldve kept him inside the night of the killing
and instead of killing some1 he might of been inside playing a board game with his family
but of course a book has to have something bad happen to make it intresting
    l8er ppl
    SHELBY A. ;)

  87.   mshampton on November 17, 2008 9:32 am

Hey Shelby! Johnny’s parents were definitely neglecting Johnny. If anything, this book shows how powerful parents can be if they are involved in their child’s life and care about what he does or who his friends are.

For Brother Z, Stargirl is NOT a chick flick. It’s about another kind of outsider. Not all outsiders are in gangs. . . .

There is a new blog for Stargirl. Check it out. :-)
